Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

No: No information provided.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: All departments, authorities and instrumentalities with purchasing or procurement authority shall select ENERGY STAR energy-efficient products when acquiring new energy-using products or replacing existing equipment. The College will make this a requirement of its standard bidding documents for all new construction, renovation, repairs and maintenance.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

Yes: The College of New Jersey has established a protocol of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution. TCNJ currently produces 700 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) by air travel. We calculated this using Clean Air, Cool Planet carbon calculator using an estimated 885,000 miles of air travel for one year at TCNJ. This mileage estimate was based on information provided by the office of Finance and Business Services. TCNJ will purchase carbon offsets from the Carbon Fund of Silver Springs, Maryland. This organization is one of two not-for-profit organizations considered. TCNJ intends to purchase offsets in support of the renewable energy projects of the Carbon Fund in keeping with our original idea to support renewable energy on campus. The cost of offsetting our carbon is calculated at a rate of $10.00 per metric ton of CO2. The cost to offset the 700 tons of carbon produced annually by TCNJ air travel is $7,000 for FY 2007.

Carbon offsets were purchased from the Carbon Fund for FY 2007 to offset 700 tons of CO2. A certificate of the offset that will support renewable energy is held in the Climate Committee's file in the office of Vice President of Facilities, Management, and Construction, Curt Heuring.
