Description The University has a campus sustainabilty committee that addresses the three major componets of sustainability: environmental, economic and social responsibility. The committee began meeting in December 2006. President David J. Schmidly signed the ACUPCC in June 2007. Branch campuses participate in the sustainability committee that has adopted University Policy & Procedure #5100 (Energy Management) and #2100 (Sustainability).

Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

Yes: The University has established that all new construction and major renovation will meet or exceed the Leed Siliver Standard. This is in conjuction with the Governor's Executive Order 2006-01. In addition, the energy performancefor these projects mustbe one half of the energy consumption for that building type according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: UNM Four-P Procurement Model-pPlanet, people, Price and Performance.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

Yes: We try to keep air travel to minimum by setting a policy that views all travel before approval. We will activly look at developing a policy for offsetting emissions.

4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.

Yes: We have partnered with the North Central Regional Transit District to provide public transportation to our students, faculty, staff and visitors. We encourage them to use it
Monday through Friday.

5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources.

Yes: We have been buying wind power for several years and have recently installed a solar array on about 3 acres of land and have begun to see some energy savings.

6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested.

Yes: We plan to use our committee to develop proposals to accomplish this task. In collaboration with our main campus.

7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: We have a good recycleing program where we recycle paper, cardboard, cans, glass and florecent light bulbs. We also plan to go further by using a local company at no cost to start recycleing plastic. We will also pursue the national RecycleMania competition. We are in the process of looking into ways of further reducing waste.
