| Description | The University has a campus sustainability committee that addresses the three major components of sustainability: environmental, economic and social responsibility. The committee began meeting in December 2006. President David J. Schmidly signed the ACUPCC in June 2007. Branch campuses participate in the sustainability committee that has adopted University Policy & Procedure #5100 (Energy Management) and #2100 (Sustainability). |
Tangible Actions
1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent. Yes: The University has established that all new construction and major renovation will meet or exceed the Leed Silver Standard. This is in conjunction with the Governor's Executive Order 2006-01. In addition, the energy performance for these projects must be one half of the energy consumption for that building type according to the U.S. Department of Energy. |
2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist. Yes: UNM Four-P Procurement Model-Planet, People, Price and Performance. |
3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution. Yes: Air travel is considered on a case by case basis, with travel approved when no other option is appropriate. UNM Los Alamos has just entered into a Memo of Understanding with The New Mexico Computing Applications Center and The New Mexico Department of Information Technology to be established as a computer visualization center, known as a Gateway Site. This will enable video conferencing and increased connectivity, with access for campus users and the community. Serving as a Gateway Site will result in expanded communication abilities and offer a viable option to face to face meetings and decrease all greenhouse gas emissions currently generated by traditional travel. |
4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution. Yes: We encourage students, faculty and staff to use the Atomic City Transit for travel within Los Alamos. Ridership on the transit is free and provides a direct commute between campus and for students living in our dorms. Additionally, we have easy access to Park and Ride bus services for our employees who may commute between Los Alamos, Espanola, Pojoaque, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. |
5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources. No: No |
6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested. No: No |
7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste. Yes: The recycling program at UNM Los Alamos separates paper, cardboard, cans, glass and fluorescent light bulbs. All collected waste materials are transported and incorporated into the Los Alamos County recycling program. |
