Tangible Actions
1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.
Yes:
The entire University system is committed to having all new construction be LEED certified.
2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist. Yes: When ever new appliances are purchased the are always Energy Star equipment. |
3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution. Yes: New fleet vehicles are all hybrids and/or high effeciency vehicles. |
4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.
Yes:
More students are using public transportation to come to campus. This is now possible because of a negotiated agreement with Berks Area Transportation Authority (BARTA) to provide bus service from the city of Reading to our campus. Additionally, faculty and staff, when traveling to University Park are encouraged to car pool.
5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources. Yes: By moving to natural gas in some areas we have been able to address this issue. |
6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested. Yes: Our Housing and Food Services Aux. has committed to buying food more locally, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the foods served. |
7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste. Yes: The college recycles 135 T of trash annually which represents about 22% of all trash generated. All maintenance vehicles operate on biofuel lubricants and the students have formed strong clubs to address the issues of environmental stewardship. Their most recent effort was working with the entire University to create "What's Your 20?" a program designed to encourage every person to reduce their carbon foot print by 20%. On each page of the website there are fun facts that hopefully inspire the visitor to the page, such as: "Fun Fact: If all the resident students at Penn State Berks shut their computers down every night, it would prevent 692,251 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year." Additionally, the campus has created an information brochure to be given to students, faculty and staff each year to remind them of each of our roles in being environmentally good stewards. |
