The Office of Sustainability coordinates with numerous campus departments to initiate and support such activities.

Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

Yes: Policy exists as part MA State Executive Order 484 of 2007, initiated by MA Sustainable Design Roundtable and MA State Executive Order 438 in 2002. Policy is to be implemented by DCAM, UMass Building Authority and Campus in its building efforts.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: Majority of campus equipment is Energy-Star enabled. Creation and declaration of a formal purchasing policy to the effect is being handled by the head of Purchasing and Procurement.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

Yes: Currently developing institutional structures for this type of measurement. Efforts to handle this are ongoing within our
Accounting Departments

4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.

Yes: Parking and Transportation Department had added hybrid fuel buses; more than 50 percent of campus community arrives to campus on public transit, carpool, vanpool; and discounted semester monthly transit passes and employee pre-tax
transit passes are available through our Student Affairs and Human Resources Departments.

5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources.

Yes: Ongoing, part of campus-wide Master Planning for the campus, led by Facilities Department. Campus Energy Conservation Committee is working on the conservation angle as well.

6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested.

Yes: Student-led initiatives were engaged in this last year as part of larger national movement to do so.

7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: Active and comprehensive recycling program exists. Many initiatives such as electronic waste recycling, zero-waste compostable dining and expansion of large and small scale recycling options in and around campus are ongoing with campus food services, IT and surplus departments. There is also an existing comprehensive recycling program for both regular and universal wastes.
