The Office of Sustainability is staffed with a full time director. This new position and and office works with faculty, students and staff throughout the institution to embrace the concept of Sustainability for all operations, curriculum and co-curricular activities.
The strategic goals involving sustainability require communication with most corners of the institution. The areas that have the most involvement are grounds, facilities, fleet, and natural resources. Accordingly, representatives from these areas have given the most input. |
Tangible Actions
1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.
Yes:
The Hocking College Energy Institute was established in 2003 and offers associate degree programs in 2 areas of study; Alternative Energy and Fuel Cells, and Automotive Hybrids and Fuel Cells. Construction of the LEED Platinum certified facility that houses these programs was completed in September 2009. The Institute had already initiated alternative energy projects on campus prior to joining ACUPCC. These projects include installing solar panels, wind turbines and use of hydrogen cell energy. The Institute maintains a Board comprised of alternative energy and environmental professionals and community and business leaders.
2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist. Yes: The college has just finished a comprehensive energy audit through a third person consultant(fall 2009). Of the numerous recommendations discussed in the summary report, purchasing ENERGY STAR certified products was a recommendation that is being strongly considered to be adopted as college policy. Our profile will be updated once this policy is completed and adopted. |
3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution. No: This mode of travel is very minimal for our College. It results in such a small contribution to our carbon footprint that all that has been recommended is to maintain the College's minimal air travel. |
4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution. No: In progress. |
5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources. No: In progress. A large solar project is currently being evaluated (spring 2011) that if feasible, would be very close to approximately 15% of our energy appetite. The proposed system would around 1.2 MB. |
6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested. No: Not applicable at the moment as the College does not have an endowment of this nature. |
7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.
Yes:
We are participating in Recyclemania this January and are developing a new campus wide recycling program that will serve the campus and surrounding community. This project is in development and will be updated once fully implemented in the spring of 2010.
