Description The President has invited and encouraged faculty, staff, students and the community to participate in development of the Sustainability Action Team. This committee is involved in creating a culture of sustainability at the College and in the Community.

Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

No: Currently do not have this policy in place but have adopted the following sustainability policy:
Haywood Community College shall teach, demonstrate and use sustainable development technologies that promote the economic, environmental and social health of the College and the communities it serves.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: Procedure 3.33.2: ENERGY STAR© Rated Product Procurement

In support of the campus Sustainable Development Policy (3.33), for equipment where ENERGY STAR© certification is available, Haywood Community College will make procuring ENERGY STAR© rated products a requirement if the following qualifications are met. Any additional cost must be less than or equal to the resulting energy savings and items purchased must meet all North Carolina State Procurement Guidelines.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

Yes: Carbon sequestration in our school forests more than compensates for air travel greenhouse gas emissions created during trips taken by faculty, staff, and students paid for by our institution.

4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.

No: Haywood County has almost no public transportation infrastructure, we are evaluating the best manner to provide incentives to increase car pooling and bicycling.

5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources.

No: Currently evaluating potential

6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested.

No: No

7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: We have adopted multiple measures to reduce waste and participated in the recent RecycleMania (2010) where we placed #1 in the state and #19 in the nation in Waste Minimization.
