Description An office of Sustainability was formed through the hiring of a Sustainability Coordinator. The Coordinator formed an Executive Steering Committee, a Sustainability Council, and Sustainability Working Groups. Members of all three tiers of the structure will have a role in funding, prioritizing, and executing projects with the greatest impact on our sustainability and climate neutrality.

Yes: Through our Design Manual, we are requiring all new equipment purchased (whether in new or existing buildings) be ENERGYSTAR-rated where feasible or available. As per Commonwealth of Virginia Executive Order 54, George Mason is also requiring all new office equipment purchased to be ENERGYSTAR-rated.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

Yes: Within the Parking & Transportation office, a Transportation Coordinator was hired this year to encourage and provide incentives for commuters to use alternative transportation to get to campus. Mason provides free local bus and shuttle service, including one direct to and from the closest Metro station during peak hours, to the entire campus community. We provide $110 in monthly Metro fare and opportunities for vanpool riding to many faculty and staff. New vanpool opportunities are being targeted to employees residing in the same geographical regions.
