Description With a new President, we are in the process of initiating a strategic planning process. We anticipate developing a full committee as part of this process. Until this time, Dr. Lincoln, Director of our Environmental Institute, is meeting informally with our President, Executive Vice President, Head of Physical plant, interested faculty, and students to accomplish our first tasks. Our goal is to complete an environmental audit by the middle of the Spring 2008 term.

Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

No: No information provided.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: Our general policy has been to purchase energy star appliances and to use compact fluorecsent and other energy efficient lighting fixtures where ever possible. We will continue this policy aggressively. Additionally, all student-owned window mounted air conditioners on campus must be energy star rated.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

No: No information provided.

4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.

No: No information provided.

5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources.

No: No information provided.

6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested.

No: No information provided.

7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: 1. Student Senate, collaborating with Physical Plant, has instituted a measure for centrally located trash and recycling for each dormitory on campus. This replaces a system where trash bins were more conveniently located than recycling stations.

2. The College has negotiated a "pay-as you-throw" contract with our trash hauler. The Federal EPA recommends this type of contact as a proven means of reducing waste generation while increasing recycling. Coupled with the action above, we have seen a significant increase in recycling and decrease in waste generation.

3. The new science center has spaces on each level specifically designed for recycling with bins for five different commodities at each. All academic and administrative buildings on campus have recycling available in central office locations.

4.) We have an active student group planning Recyclemania and fully anticipate participation this winter.
