Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

Yes: American Public University System has adopted the LEED's certification as the goal for all new construction whenever it is financially feasible to do so.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: For all existing or new structures, APUS will migrate to "Energy Star" certified products for lighting and appliances wherever feasible. Energy Star certification will also be a major consideration in the purchase of Information Technology equipment (computers, printers, displays, etc).

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

No: American Public University System is a high technology firm and has outfitted buildings in each of our primary locations with audio and video conferencing systems to help minimize trave between the sites. In addition, we are investigating adding Internet conferencing to reduce travel requirement even more. In 2007, we estimate we avoided 145,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. It is the policy of the company to continue to make use of these facilities in the future wherever it is reasonable to do so.

4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.
