Tangible Actions

1. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent.

Yes: President's Council approved the recommendation of the Climate Commitment Committee to add the following amendment to our Comprehensive Environmental Policy in Spring 2008:

All new facilities and major renovations shall incorporate sustainable practices to the degree feasible and shall strive, at a minimum, to meet the equivalent of a LEED Silver rating in their design. Project management teams are encouraged to meet higher LEED rating levels whenever possible.

2. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist.

Yes: D. Departments shall specify and purchase ENERGY STAR-certified energy-efficient products in all product categories for which such ratings exist.
President's Council approved the recommendation of the Climate Commitment Committee to add the following TWO amendments to our Comprehensive
Environmental Policy in Spring 2008:

Departments shall specify and purchase ENERGY STAR-certified energy-efficient products in all product categories for which such ratings exist.

and

Departments shall be encouraged to specify and purchase environmentally preferable products that meet or exceed the standards of third-party certification programs for environmental and/or sustainable products where such ratings exist.

3. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution.

No: We are still studying this suggestion. We have developed a draft policy for review and possible approval by President's Council.

4. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution.

Yes: The College currently offers free bus passes for full-time faculty and staff, and for part-time staff upon request. The College underwrites 30% of the cost of 10-ride and monthly bus passes sold to students in our College bookstore. We negotiated with the local transit company for a special discounted semester bus pass for students and we offer a further 30% discount off the purchase price of that pass. We actively work with our transit provider to offer special promotions and marketing materials to encourage transit ridership.

5. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution's electricity consumption from renewable sources.

Yes: We currently purchase the balance of purchased electricity from renewable sources for our new LEED Platinum-certified Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise. We have committed to purchasing the balance of purchased electricity from renewable sources for our Gateway project, which is also tracking to achieve LEED Platinum certification when it opens in Spring 2009. These two buildings are expected to amount to 15% of our electricity consumption.

6. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested.

No: We do not manage our campus endowment investment portfolio in a manner which would allow for us to submit climate and/or sustainability shareholder proposals.

7. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Yes: We annually participate in RecycleMania and will do so in Spring 2009. (1) In Fall 2007, we integrated post-consumer separation and collection of food waste and compostable serviceware in ICSquare, our retail food court area, greatly reducing our trash production and increasing our compost stream. (2) In Spring 2008, we plan to integrate post-consumer separation of food waste and compostable serviceware in three satellite retail food operations. (3) In Spring 2008, we will seek to standardize processes to support "zero waste" compostable collections from catered events in the Campus Center, further reducing landfill waste and increasing our compostable stream. (4) In Spring 2009, we will will roll out post-consumer compost collection in a number of areas on campus.
