GHG Report for University of Minnesota-Duluth

Submitted on July 30, 2009; last updated on May 5, 2011

Summary Statistics

Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.
Total Per Full-Time Enrollment Per 1000 Square Feet % Offset
Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2) 53,486 metric tons of CO2e 4.7 metric tons of CO2e 17.3 metric tons of CO2e 0%
Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2 + 3) 57,562 metric tons of CO2e 5.1 metric tons of CO2e 18.6 metric tons of CO2e 0%
Net emissions 57,562 metric tons of CO2e 5.1 metric tons of CO2e 18.6 metric tons of CO2e N/A

Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries

Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report January 1, 2007
Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries Operational control approach
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.

A few off-campus buildings were not captured in the inventory, due to their lack of electricity and/or heating or data collection barriers: Fens Research Facility, St. Louis Bay Aquatic Center, and Outpost. These buildings represent less than 1% of the total gross square footage for campus operations.

Emissions calculation tool used Clean Air-Cool Planet
Please describe why this tool was selected.

Recommended method by ACUPCC.

Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.

No information provided

Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? No information provided
Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? Sustainability office staff
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.

Emissions data were gathered by UMD Facilities Management staff, the UMD Sustainability Coordinator, and a Sustainability Student Assistant (supervised by the Sustainability Coordinator). Data was acquired for the 2007 calendar year.

Note: Natural gas data was gathered originally for Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) reporting, and were independently verified through participation in the CCX.

Please describe any emissions sources that were classified as de minimis and explain how a determination of the significance of these emissions was made.

No information provided

Please describe any data limitations related to this submission and any major assumptions made in response to these limitations.

Air travel was based on use of University purchasing cards, which are most often used to purchase travel. A small but unknown number of university staff might use alternative means to pay for air travel (personal credit cards) and seek reimbursement- however, this data was not available for 2007. A small but unknown number of personal vehicle miles were likely driven for university business, but this data was not available for 2007. This data collection issue will be researched and addressed for future inventories.

Auditing and Verification

These emissions data have been audited, verified, or peer-reviewed.
Please briefly describe this verification, if any.

Emissions from steam production for the UMD campus (excluding the Coleraine Research Center) were verified by a third party due to participation in Chicago Climate Exchange.
