GHG Report for Berry College

Submitted on January 15, 2009; last updated on January 23, 2009

Summary Statistics

Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.

Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries

Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report July 1, 2007
Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries No information provided
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.

Our old dairy facility is leased to a private foundation and is currently used as a retreat. The daily operation of this facility is outside the control of the college and therefore was not included in this inventory.

Emissions calculation tool used Clean Air-Cool Planet
Please describe why this tool was selected.

It was recommended by a number of other schools and the ACUPCC

Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.

CA-CP Campus Carbon Calculator's default emissions coefficients

Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? Third Assessment Report
Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? Faculty, Staff, and Students
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.

An ad hoc committee, composed of staff, faculty, and students, was organized in September of 2007, and charged with meeting the requirements of the ACUPCC agreement. The committee served as a clearinghouse for the data collection, much of which was collected by students. The travel and commuting data were obtained by extrapolation of survey results. Solid-waste data was based on a weekly average measured during the 2008 Recyclemania competition. The remaining values were obtained by actual measurements made during the appropriate time frame.

Please describe any emissions sources that were classified as de minimis and explain how a determination of the significance of these emissions was made.

Please describe any data limitations related to this submission and any major assumptions made in response to these limitations.

Travel and commuting values were based on survey results. Just over 10% of the students responded to a written survey distributed in the student center and approximately 20% of the faculty/staff completed an on-line survey. The college currently does not track college-reimbursed travel in a way that is conducive for this type of data collection, so the values listed only represent an estimate. We are looking a ways to better capture this information for future reports.
