GHG Report for University of New Mexico Main Campus

Submitted on August 19, 2008; last updated on November 16, 2009

Summary Statistics

Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.

Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries

Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report January 1, 2006
Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries No information provided
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.

Establishing the official boundaries of the University of New Mexico is a difficult task. There are a smattering of small properties owned or leased by the university in the general vicinity of the campus as well as several scattered throughout the city of Albuquerque. This report captures all of the major properties of the north, central, and south campuses and most of the smaller properties near these campuses. This report does not include the UNM Hospital and small properties in which the utility bills are not processed by the Physical Plant Department.

Emissions calculation tool used Clean Air-Cool Planet
Please describe why this tool was selected.

It is very convenient and easy to use.

Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.

The Clean Air Cool Planet coefficients were used and cross-referenced with the values from the "EPA Inventory fo Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks 1990 - 2004" and the "EPA U.S. Emissions Inventory 2003".

Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? Third Assessment Report
Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? Associate Director, Utilities
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.

The Associate Director of Utilities, Jeff Zumwalt, drafted the inventory. He utilized the The Clean Air Cool Planet tool to determine the required data. Data requests were sent to the appropriate parties and/or research was conducted by the author.

Please describe any emissions sources that were classified as de minimis and explain how a determination of the significance of these emissions was made.

No information provided

Please describe any data limitations related to this submission and any major assumptions made in response to these limitations.

The value for air travel emissions was derived from the total costs of "out of state" travel. A portion of these costs were assumed to be for air travel and then applied to the ACUPCC conversion factor of 0.25 $/mile.

Also, the commuting emissions were based on a 2003 survey conducted by Parking and Transportation Services. The distances traveled were based on the zip codes of the UNM faculty, staff, and students.
