GHG Report for Iowa Lakes Community College

Submitted on September 22, 2008; last updated on February 13, 2012

Summary Statistics

Making fair comparisons between higher education institutions is always challenging due to the rich diversity of higher education. The unverified nature of the information in this database and unavailability of unbiased normalization metrics means such comparisons are even more difficult. Users should therefore approach direct institution to institution comparisons with caution and recognize that all comparisons between institutions are inherently biased.
Total Per Full-Time Enrollment Per 1000 Square Feet % Offset
Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2) 6,376 metric tons of CO2e 1.2 metric tons of CO2e 9.8 metric tons of CO2e 61%
Gross emissions (Scopes 1 + 2 + 3) 7,310 metric tons of CO2e 1.4 metric tons of CO2e 11.2 metric tons of CO2e 53%
Net emissions 3,439 metric tons of CO2e 0.6 metric tons of CO2e 5.3 metric tons of CO2e N/A

Emissions Inventory Methodology and Boundaries

Start date of the 12-month period covered in this report January 1, 2006
Consolidation methodology used to determine organizational boundaries Operational control approach
If any institution-owned, leased, or operated buildings or other holdings that should fall within the organizational boundaries are omitted, briefly explain why.

None omitted

Emissions calculation tool used Other
Please describe why this tool was selected.

Used WRI GHG Protocol. Utilized for flexibility in handling some non-standard emission sources, multiple campuses, multiple utilities, and multiple renewable energy profiles.

Please describe the source(s) of the emissions coefficients used.

Used WRI GHG Protocol, current as of August 17, 2007

Which version of IPCC's list of global warming potentials did you use? Third Assessment Report
Who primarily conducted this emissions inventory? External consultant
Please describe the process of conducting the inventory.

Iowa Lakes staff assembled consumption and institutional data and presented that information to consultants, Sebesta Blomberg and Associates, Inc. The consultants provided direction on what records to include and in what form. The process took approximately 1.5 months.

Please describe any emissions sources that were classified as de minimis and explain how a determination of the significance of these emissions was made.

No information provided

Please describe any data limitations related to this submission and any major assumptions made in response to these limitations.

Some values were estimated using 2007 data due to the unavailbility of 2006 data for those categories. Electric and gas utility consumption records were assembled using calendar years to begin to bring the Iowa Lakes records in line with the period that will potentially be used for reporting under future GHG regulations and programs. Fleet vehicle fuel economy ratings were determined using the midpoint of USEPA city and highway mileage rankings for the appropriate vehicle model and year. Commuting records for studetns were unavailable. Staff commuting was estimated from a survey assuming 19 mpg average.

Mitigation Data

Carbon Offsets
Carbon offsets purchased 3,871.0 metric tons of CO2e
Offset verification program(s) No information provided
Description of offsets purchased (including vendor, project source, etc.)

Iowa Lakes has its own wind turbine which generates power. The ACUPCC report format does not provide a format for Iowa Lakes to report credits from wind energy generated by its own wind turbine. Therefore, Iowa Lakes is reporting this credit here under Carbon Offsets.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
Total RECs purchased 0 kWh
Percent of total electricity consumption mitigated through the purchase of RECs 0.0 %
Emissions reductions due to the purchase of RECs 0.0 metric tons of CO2e
REC verification program(s) No information provided
Description of RECs purchased (including vendor, project source, etc.)

No information provided

Sequestration and Carbon Storage
Sequestration due to land owned by the institution 0.0 metric tons of CO2e
