Narratives

Please describe your institution's greenhouse gas mitigation strategies.

Iowa Lakes’ greenhouse gas inventory indicates that the majority of Iowa Lakes’ greenhouse gas emissions are from purchased electricity, natural gas used for space and water heating and operating equipment.

Thus, the general strategies for addressing Iowa Lakes’ climate impact should include:
•Increased energy conservation efforts at Iowa Lakes, paired with additional energy projects which permit energy conservation measures.
•A commitment to new construction and renovation projects that incorporate sustainable principles and are energy efficient.
•Education and outreach in the classrooms and community about climate change and support for businesses and local government interested in addressing climate change.
•Development or purchase of environmental credits to address Iowa Lakes’ remaining greenhouse gas emissions, concentrating on opportunities in the local community.
•Development of additional renewable energy generation, e.g. solar, wind, biomass.

Please describe your institution's plans to make sustainability a part of the curriculum for all students.

Environmental sustainability has been a significant curriculum foundation for degree program students in:
•Environmental Studies, Associate Science Degree, since 1978.
•Wind Energy and Turbine Technology, Associate in Applied Science, August 2004.
•Sustainable Energy Resources Management, Associate Science Degree, 2006.
•Bio Renewable Fuels Technology, Associate in Applied Science, fall of 2006.

Related programs curriculum and practices with a significant impact on environmental sustainability include:
Agribusiness, Ag Production and Landscape & Turfgrass Technology have implemented and taught sustainability practices for years. Sustainable practices utilized on the college farm include 13-16 acres of wetlands, GPS chemical applications, conservation tillage, buffer strips, using soy-diesel and gasohol, and reducing mowing on the property.

Sustainability will be introduced in all classroom settings in a variety of methods to increase student awareness.

Please describe your institution's plans to expand research efforts toward the achievement of climate neutrality.
