This Climate Action Plan demonstrates that Wesleyan College is on track to meet its first greenhouse gas reduction commitment of 20% by 2017 from a 2007 baseline. These greenhouse gas reductions will come primarily from energy upgrades to campus buildings, although the campus forests annual sequestration also provides meaningful greenhouse gas reduction. In order to meet future targets without large scale purchasing of offsets on the commercial market, major new strides in energy efficiency and Wesleyans energy mix will be required. Wesleyan Colleges success with building energy upgrades and its forthcoming Strategic Sustainability Plan will provide a foundation for these later efforts.
Wesleyan College currently offers an Environmental Studies minor, a course of study that includes education about climate change and anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in addition to other sustainability issues. The College is currently developing a broader course of study that will lead to the addition of Environmental Studies as a major.
In the development of Wesleyan Colleges Strategic Sustainability Plan, several novel community outreach efforts are being considered: 1. Offering panel discussions on various environmental topics throughout the academic year 2. Creating a community recycling center on Wesleyan Colleges campus 3. Encouraging greater community use of campus forestland These community outreach efforts will be adopted and implemented as part of the Strategic Sustainability Plan and will be described in more detail in the next iteration of Wesleyans Climate Action Plan.
