In the short run, the institution is focused on individually metering buildings in order to understand patterns of energy consumption in each building. We are focused on reducing our consumption of electricity (the largest component of our carbon footprint) by improving the efficiency of all aspects of our lighting infrastructure and computing facilities, supporting a "turn it off" campaign, and replacing equipment with the most energy efficient options. Additionally we are promoting carpooling, decreasing waste with a trayless dining hall, decreasing use of disposable products and promoting recycling. We are also focused on increasing local food use in our dining facility and including environmental attributes as a key component in our purchasing policy. In the long run we are exploring options for alternative energy sources.
Environmental Sustainability is one of the four hallmarks of our 5 year strategic plan. We have a developed a voluntary Sustainability Pledge which educates our campus community, promotes campus wide dialog as well as more sustainable behavior. This year Sowell funds are being used to support a faculty group that is focused on exploring ways to make sustainability a priority in our curriculum.
Hollins is a member of the Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition (RVCCC). This organization's primary mission is to reduce greenhouse gas output in our geographic region. We are active in this organization as well supporting Roanoke County's committee that is focused on reducing the County's carbon footprint.
